National Cycle Sponsors 2016 Sisters' Centennial Motorcycle Ride

MAYWOOD, IL (July 05, 2016)"National Cycle is proud to sponsor the 2016 Sisters' Centennial Motorcycle Ride and to provide our premier quality hardcoated polycarbonate VStream® Windscreens to make the long ride more enjoyable," said Ann and Barry Willey. "We've had woman riders in our family and in our company for decades, and strongly believe that a woman's place in this world is in the rider's seat of a powerful motorcycle."

Scheduled July 03-24, 2016, the AMA-sanctioned event is a cross-country motorcycle ride for women commemorating the 100th anniversary of Adeline and Augusta Van Buren's historic ride across the United States from New York to San Francisco. The event will conclude with a group ride in to San Francisco on July 23, 2016, where festivities will celebrate the event completion and riders' accomplishments.

Sisters' Ride

"This was a phenomenal accomplishment by two courageous women at a time when few roads were paved, post-Victorian attitudes were in full flare and women did not yet have the right to vote," said Alisa Clickenger, one of the event organizers. "This ride is intended to honor their achievement and promote the growth of today's female motorcyclists and the motorcycling community."

Women have several options for participation, including a fully supported tour, as well as self-guided tours of the entire route or individual segments. Registration is open on the event website at www.SistersMotorcycleRide.com.

Van Buren Sisters

About Adeline and Augusta Van Buren

Sisters Augusta Van Buren, a librarian, and Adeline Van Buren, a teacher, were the first women to ride 5,500 miles in 60 days over hazardous roads to cross the continental United States, each on their own solo motorcycle, in 1916. They descended from Martin Van Buren, the eighth President of the United States, and were "society girls".

They set out from Brooklyn, New York on July 4, riding 1000cc Indian Power Plus motorcycles equipped with acetylene gas headlights and arrived in Los Angeles on September 8 after having to contend with poor roads, heavy rains and mud, natural barriers like the Rocky Mountains and social barriers such as the local police who took offense at their choice of men's clothing. They became the first women to reach the 14,109 feet summit of Pikes Peak by any motor vehicle.

Adeline continued her career as an educator, and earned her law degree from New York University. Augusta became a pilot, flying in Amelia Earhart's Ninety-Nines international women's flying organization, having played significant roles in the women's rights movement.
